RHA to bring free movies to Web site in fall semester

Students who enjoy watching Residence Hall Association TV’s free movies in their dorm will be able to watch those movies from anywhere on campus next fall.

RHA will make its RHA TV — channels 11 and 12 — available as an application link from their Web site, www.rha.msu.edu, after signing a contract with Swank Motion Pictures Inc.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to provide a new service to students, and hopefully people will get a lot of use out of it and it will bring more people to our Web site and promote the services we do even more,” RHA President Emma Perot said.

The application will only be viewable on campus for students who have paid the $25 refundable RHA tax, RHA TV Director Scott Bishop said.

“Anybody on campus who’s paid the RHA tax, so by default, anybody living in the residence halls, and any nonresidents who decide to pay that tax (can watch it),” he said.

Undergraduate students living on campus are automatically charged the tax unless they request a refund.

Swank Motion Pictures Inc. provides RHA with movies for its movie offices and Campus Center Cinemas. RHA will pay $5,000 per semester for the service.

“It will be taxpayers’ dollars, but we’ve discussed it in depth with the general assembly a number of times and the general consensus is that it was worth the cost,” Bishop said.

Bishop said students who have set up their own wireless routers will still be able to watch the movies through their own internet, as long as they are on campus.

“The entire MSU campus uses a certain range of addresses that are reserved specifically for campus so we believe that since those routers are going to be listed under those addresses, they’ll also be able to access our server,” Bishop said.

Perot said this will draw students to RHA’s Web site, which will inform students about other services RHA provides.

“I think every student likes watching movies, so it will be great because not only will we be able to show movies, but the advertisements will allow us time to let our constituents have more advertisements,” she said.

Perot said she thinks this won’t take away from students’ attentiveness in class and students will use the service responsibly.

At Wednesday’s meeting, Robert Patterson, the Division of Housing & Food Services chief financial officer, discussed the recent 5.25 percent increase for room and board with RHA.

Patterson answered questions and explained the reasons for each increase for the 2009-10 academic year.

Patterson said the cost of room and board has increased four of the last five years. He met with Perot and former RHA President Mark Dobson several times before the increase was recommended to the MSU Board of Trustees.

“We wanted to make sure that RHA isn’t left in the dark,” Patterson said.

NEW VIDEO ON H1N1 AND FLU PREVENTION NOW AVAILABLE TO COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (Swank Healthcare – Tim Swank, Chairman)

St. Louis, MO – October 21, 2009 – Residence Life Cinema, a division of Swank Motion Pictures Inc. has produced a new video for use on college and university campuses to address H1N1 and other flu-prevention tactics.

The animated video, which is one minute in length, was created specifically for college-aged students living in residence halls. Recommendations for flu prevention are outlined in the video, such as proper ways to sneeze, cough and when to self-isolate. The video is available to preview at www.reslife.com.

At such a critical time many schools have started running the video as part of their wellness programs. Corey Farris from West Virginia University commented, “This video came at the perfect time. Our campus is in the middle of an awareness campaign – we’re giving flu vaccines, distributing hand sanitizers, and trying to give our students information on how to stay healthy.”

The video was released at the beginning of October to existing customers of Residence Life Cinema and is now available for purchase to other colleges and universities nationwide.  “As our current customers know, we strive to provide our schools with not only movie entertainment, but relevant educational and informational content,” said Tim Swank, Swank Motion Pictures’ Chairman. “We provide turnkey systems and programming for cable-based, and online environments focused at improving the communication from the campus to the student population.” This is the first time in 16 years that Residence Life Cinema has provided content to campuses that do not have a Residence Life Cinema program.  This first-time exception was made due to the critical nature of this information and the potential positive impact on college campuses. In addition to the Flu Prevention video, Residence Life Cinema customers have access to videos on other campus life issues such as: Alcohol Awareness, Campus Safety, Online Security, Sexual Assault, Hazing, and more.

Administrators interested in purchasing the Flu Prevention video or learning more about Residence Life Cinema and the content they provide, are asked to call

Campuses Find New Ways to Power Curriculum with Film

Digital Campus by Swank Motion Pictures, Inc.® is the latest technology available to legally distribute films to a student population for course-related assignments.  Using this multi-media approach to learning, Digital Campus has become a popular learning tool on campus’ nationwide.

Schools have long struggled with ways students could access course-related films. Sharing copies and long waits at course reserves have challenged professors who incorporate films into the learning process but don’t want to take up valuable class time. With Digital Campus, however, campuses have discovered the ease of legally distributing films online through a Course Management system.  Christine Kubiak from Illinois State University commented, “Students were very positive about watching the film through Blackboard and how easy it was to access.”

The concept of Digital Campus is simple. Through a customized website, film links are embedded in a campus’ Course Management System. Students then access assigned films online through their course pages just as they would access copies of a lecture or study guide. The films are available 24/7 and allow students to fast forward, rewind and pause films in order to take notes or answer questions associated with an assignment.

“Providing students with a legal alternative to sharing DVD copies started as our priority in creating Digital Campus,” Rob Hunter, Executive Vice President of Swank Motion Pictures stated. “As Digital Campus has grown, however, we have discovered that Distance Learning courses are greatly benefiting as well.” Because of Swank Motion Pictures’ unique relationship with the majority of major Hollywood studios, Digital Campus allows distance-learning courses to use a film in its entirety.

Films provide a backdrop and understanding for topics discussed in the classroom. With Digital Campus schools have been able to incorporate films more readily into their curriculum.
